If, like us, you have finally found the perfect pair of shades only to put them on your head and feel the opposite of slick, we see you.
Regarding eyewear, we all want to feel confident in our decisions, so we can hold our heads high as we go about our day. With this in mind, GR8 Sunglasses has compiled a guide to help you choose the perfect pair of men's or women's sunglasses for your face shape.
What is my face shape?
First things first, it’s measuring time. Before thinking about the types of face shapes, getting to grips with your dynamics is essential.
Crack out the measuring tape or your iPhone app; we don't judge! And take note of the following:
- Face Length: Measure from the start of your hairline to the lowest part of your chin.
- Forehead Width: Measure across the centre of your forehead about 1-2 inches above your eyebrows. Don't bend the tape—keep it flat!
- Cheekbone Width: Still keeping the tape flat, measure from the highest point of one cheekbone to the other.
- Jawline Width: A little fiddly, hold the measuring tape just below your ear and measure down to the centre of your chin; it is best to do this on both sides rather than multiplying to get a wholly accurate measure.
Okay, now that measurements are done and dusted, let's consider the face shapes and their characteristics. Your measurements will help you to determine which category you fit into.
Triangle
If your forehead and cheekbones are more prominent than your chin measurement and your chin ends in a pointy or slightly rounded tip, this face shape might be yours.
Round
If your measurements have equal face and width length, your face shape will likely be round.
Square
If your forehead, cheeks and jawline are the same width, your face shape is square. While the measurements of square faces are similar to that of round, the face shape will take on a more angular structure with minimal curves.
Oval
An oval face will have smaller forehead width than cheekbones and typically be longer than wider. In addition, the jawline will be rounded instead of the angular square shape.
Heart
In order, your forehead will be more prominent than your cheekbones, which will be bigger than your jawline, and the chin will end with a narrow tip. A common characteristic of this face shape is a widow's hairline, a distinctive v-shape of hair at the top of the forehead.
Diamond
Like the oval, diamond faces will have prominent cheekbones, but they will be more angular than the oval shape and slightly wider than the forehead shape. The chin will also end at a narrow point.
Rectangle
Rectangle faces are longer than they are wide, and their facial features all tend to be the same width apart; this face shape is typical in older people as their skin settles into the lower half of their face.
What are the best sunglasses for my face shape?
Here comes the good part, sit back, relax and take the stress out of choosing your new pair of shades.
Triangle: To balance out the width of your jawline, choosing eyewear with angular features or a brow bar to draw attention upwards look great.
For ladies, cat eye styles add height and Hollywood glamour, whereas men could opt for aviators with top-heavy details but avoid those that add more focus to your lower face.
Oval shapes are also a great all-rounder as they add width without creating length in your face. This face shape will look fantastic with our collection of special frames for some edgy flair in your accessories.
Round: The best thing to do when shopping for frames when your face is round is to think the opposite, avoid curved lines and look for sharp edges and angular details; square, wayfarer, or rectangle shapes will be a big hit.
Square: Similar to the above, square face shapes are perfectly complimented by round or oval lenses to balance out your strong jawline.
Oval: Luckily, any frame will look great if you have this face shape! Browse our extensive collection of frames and treat yourself to some designer sunglasses.
Heart: Avoid elongating your face by choosing top-heavy sunglasses. Opting for rimless or rounded edges will help to soften out your jawline.
Diamond: Rounded or oval frames or rimless options are great for this face shape as they help to compliment wide cheekbones.
Rectangle: Long faces look great with thick frames or oversized lenses. This face shape can look great with any eyewear type if they avoid small frames like ovals.
